Indigenous Community Sport Consultant

The mission of the Manitoba Aboriginal Sports & Recreation Council (MASRC) is to improve the health outcomes of Indigenous people throughout Manitoba by supporting and encouraging physically active communities. The programs delivered by the MASRC are designed to build capacity and increase access to sport, recreation, and physical activity in First Nation, Metis, and Inuit communities, schools, and other delivery agencies across the province.

General Description

The MASRC is seeking a candidate to fill the following full-time staff vacancy: Indigenous Community Sport Consultant (ICSC). Reporting to the Executive Director and working closely with the other staff, the primary role of the ICSC is to engage communities, partners, groups in the design and delivery of community-based, culturally relevant sport, recreation, and physical activity programs for Indigenous people throughout the province. The ideal candidate will possess an extensive background in the areas of sport, recreation, and physical activity and have established networks/connections among Indigenous communities and organizations throughout the province.

Competencies and Requirements

  • Post-secondary degree/certificate AND/OR three (3) years of related job experience
  • Applied knowledge of Indigenous community issues in Manitoba
  • Work experience in the field of sport, recreation, and physical activity
  • Event and project management experience
  • Strong verbal, written communication and presentation skills
  • Exceptional organization skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with limited supervision
  • Able to travel throughout the region to promote and support the delivery of programs (requiring a flexible work schedule, valid driver's license, and the ability to overnight)
  • Successful completion of a criminal record and vulnerable sector checks.

Term: Full-time permanent employment

Salary range: $37-39,000 to start (dependent on experience)

Location: Based out of MASRC office in Winnipeg, Manitoba

Sport for Social Development Program Leader (SSD)

General Description

Under the direction of the SSD Program Supervisor, the SSD Program Leader will assist in community programs for the Indigenous population in Manitoba. The goal of the Program is to increase employability, education, health and lower at-risk behaviour through sport and recreation. The program lead will execute programs with the above goals, in community and teach and mentor community members to run their own sport and recreational programs.

The Program Leader will facilitate and mentor in multiple sports, leadership activities and traditional games. They will travel to five or more communities at least three times per year, per community. Building relationships with the community mentees is a large part of the position. The position will be based in Winnipeg, but monthly travel throughout the province is required.

Competencies and Requirements

  • A degree in social science education AND/OR 3-5 years equivalent work experience
  • Have an in-depth knowledge and understanding of Manitoba's Indigenous community
  • Able to travel throughout the region to promote and support the delivery of programs (requiring a flexible work schedule, valid driver's license, and the ability to overnight)
  • Work with mentees to create culturally relevant events, programs and training opportunities based on each communities' specific needs and capacities
  • Collaborate with communities, PSO's and all other partners
  • Be able to manage multiple priorities, excellent time management skills, and the ability to function independently and as part of a team
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills
  • Strong skills in MS Office
  • Experience in an office, sport or recreation and not for profit organizations
  • Experience in project coordination and relationship management
  • Experience in conducting workshops and presentations and proposal writing
  • The ideal candidate will be extremely detailed orientated and a team player, with a desire to work with others
  • Successful completion of Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Check are required upon selection.
