Manitoba 55+ Games

June 11, 2019 to June 13, 2019

AAIM (a not-for-profit organization) invites you to attend the Manitoba 55 Plus Games, a province-wide event aimed at promoting healthy active living for all older Manitobans. This is an annual celebration of age-friendly events that takes place in a different rural community in Manitoba each June. The Manitoba 55 Plus Games continue to encourage Manitobans 55 years of age and older to participate in a festival of social activities and friendly competition; all so important in maintaining health, functional ability and quality of life.

Since 1983, the Manitoba Society of Seniors (MSOS) had proudly hosted the annual 55 Plus Games in a different community in Manitoba each year. In 2012, the torch and spirit of the Games was placed in the capable hands of the Active Living Coalition for Older Adults in Manitoba (ALCOA-MB) - now Active Aging in Manitoba (AAIM). Over 25 age-friendly events will attract more than 1000 athletes, 300 volunteers and many more spectators to 3 days of fun. If you have never been this is one celebration you will not want to miss!

The Games are the largest 55+ annual multi-sport event in Manitoba, breaking the common stereotype that seniors don't stay active into their 60s, 70s and 80s. In fact, the oldest male and female athletes are both well over 90 years old. Many other participants have been bit by the "Games bug" and continue to visit the Games every year no matter where the event is held.

We are now focusing our efforts on the next 2019 55 Plus Games to be held in Swan River, Manitoba, June 11-13, 2019. After a series of recent successful 55+ Games in the Westman region, Swan River is excited to bring this event North to their community for the first time since 1992 and is enthusiastic having already hosted many years of successful community events. They expect approximately 900-1,000 Manitobans over the age of 55 to take part in the Provincial Games this year. This showcase event is the culmination of regional and community events involving thousands of older Manitobans across Manitoba.

Events range from card games to scrabble, snooker, floor curling/shuffleboard, track, swimming and slo-pitch. Slo-pitch is the largest event at the Games, drawing close to 15 teams every year. The 3 days of activities make for some fun and enjoyable competition for participants and spectators alike!

The Games, while emphasizing active, recreational activities, are also about providing a social and cultural atmosphere through entertainment and social events. A Variety Concert is held on the Tuesday night and an Athletes' Banquet allows the participants a chance to mingle on Wednesday night. The banquet includes a dinner, dance and speeches by local dignitaries. Past banquet speakers included a special appearance from Lloyd Robertson.

The 55 Plus Games are about fun, fitness and fellowship. All competitors take home memories of new friends, local culture and experiences and a renewed enthusiasm to stay active and healthy. The 55 Plus Games, which are volunteer-driven, strive towards keeping older adults healthy, active and involved in community projects.
