Organization: Manitoba Aboriginal Sports & Recreation Council (MASRC)
Location: Winnipeg, MB
Reports to: Executive Director
Position Summary:
The Communications Coordinator plays a key role in supporting and enhancing the communications success of the MASRC. This role involves a range of tasks including content creation, social media management, website updates, media relations, and program communications. The Coordinator promotes all MASRC programs, events, and initiatives, and is instrumental in maintaining positive engagement with Indigenous communities across Manitoba.
The ideal candidate will have strong communication and design skills, experience in digital media, and an ability to handle multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment. The position is based in Winnipeg but may require occasional travel.
Key Responsibilities:
- Regularly update the MASRC's website with news, events, and announcements.
- Manage social media channels (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter), post engaging content, respond to inquiries, and stay informed on trends in social media, Indigenous sports, and opportunities.
- Oversee the Athlete & Community Champion of the Month awards and assist with program promotion, including design of materials (posters, brochures, digital assets), and produce the MASRC's Annual Report.
- Develop and distribute media releases when necessary and maintain current media contacts.
- Create and distribute a monthly newsletter to Indigenous communities, funders and interested organizations.
Requirements:
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with a keen attention to detail.
- Excellent computer knowledge in Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel) and experience with social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn).
- Experience with website management tools (WordPress, etc.) and basic graphic design (e.g., Canva, Adobe Creative Suite).
- Knowledge of social media trends, Indigenous sports, and community engagement strategies.
- Strong organizational, time-management, and multitasking skills. The ability to work independently and as part of a team, managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Knowledge of the Manitoba sports system, particularly Indigenous sports organizations and athletes.
- Experience creating newsletters, promotional materials, and reports.
Education and Qualifications:
- Degree or diploma in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism with a minimum of 2 years work experience in communications or a similar role.
- Connections with and an understanding of Indigenous communities, particularly in the context of sports and recreation, is an asset.
- Experience working with media and event promotion.
Other Requirements:
- Must provide a current and satisfactory Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Check.
- Must have a valid and current class 5 Manitoba Driver's License

Job Type:
This is a full-time maternity leave position (minimum 1.25 years with possibility of extension). Standard hours are 35 hours per week, however some weekends and evenings may be required. Salary ranges from $42,000 - 45,000 per year depending on education and experience.
