Sport Leadership: Procedures and Criteria
The Manitoba Aboriginal Sport & Recreation Council (MASRC) will work to improve the existing partnership with Coaching Manitoba and other agencies to deliver suitable programs that will fit the leadership development needs of the Aboriginal sport community.
This partnership will increase the number of qualified Aboriginal coaches in Manitoba and working in conjunction with educational institutions will enable the promotion of sport leadership to the youth as part of our long-term strategies. This partnership will also promote and work in conjunction with the Federal and Provincial Bi-Lateral Sport and Recreation Agreement in respect to rural and urban initiatives.
Procedures
The MASRC is currently developing a communication plan that will serve to promote the programs and services to all Aboriginal participants in Manitoba. Through effective communication strategies, the Aboriginal people will be given the opportunity to host or attend any clinic, learn more about the area of coaching or officiating, and take steps to further the knowledge and skills of their sport of choice.
Procedures will be handled on a case-by-case basis where different scenarios can be encountered with various individuals, organizations, sport clubs and communities. In any case:
- MASRC will be notified by Coaching Manitoba, PSO’s and other agencies if the request doesn’t come directly into MASRC
- MASRC will record all necessary information such as names, proposed dates, locations, sport of choice, certification level required, ancestry and any other information required either by Coaching Manitoba or the PSO’s
- MASRC will forward to the associated agency the collected information and discuss options and financial arrangements
- MASRC may be required to convene meetings to review requests if there are barriers identified (i.e. rural-remote communities, travel issues, etc.)
MASRC will coordinate monthly monitoring/evaluation meetings with all agencies to review the program, identify gaps in funding, improve/solidify procedures, and track the progress of our ultimate goals. The process will include:
- Promote existing clinics provided through Coaching Manitoba
- Select communities identified through Bilateral
- Select communities hosting regional qualifiers for MISG
- Select communities hosting Team Manitoba qualifying events
- Communities (Rec. Directors) expressing interest to host
- Provide certification programs through high school leadership classes
- Promotion at youth conferences, Recreation Connections, etc.
Criteria
- Participants must be of Aboriginal descent to qualify for funding and identify themselves as Aboriginal in the registration forms
- Participants must be a minimum 16 years old for entry level coaching
- Participants must be a minimum 12 years old for minor official training
- Participants must be registered through the community/school contact by established deadlines
- Participants must pay 50% of the total registration fee to the course conductor
- Participants will be reimbursed fully after successful completion of the clinic. Successful completion is defined as having 100% attendance and completion of all required assignments
